Another look back at my gypsy wandering past. MALAYSIA. Man, I freaking love this place. All of my mom's side of the family resides here, and I miss being around them so much. I miss all that Malaysian and Chinese culture that is so strong and runs so deep. I love how relaxed the country is, but at the same time how intense it is. I love how modern and ahead of the times it is, yet also how deeply rooted it is in its past. I've never felt more comfortable and more at home than in this Southeastern country so far far away. Probably too exotic for most, but that feels just right for me. Not sure when I'll go back, but all I know is that I've been thinking about it a lot lately. Too many memories are rushing back from when my sister and I visited for two months just over two years ago. We stayed in Subang Jaya and ate from the best street vendors, got our taste of the city whenever we wanted in Kuala Lumpur (major shopping in Bukit Bintang), saw the oldest side of the country in Melaka, and enjoyed the sun and everlasting beaches in Penang (I still can never forget the time we went swimming during a tropical rain storm). We lived both like locals and tourists, and it was an amazing lifestyle. There is still so much I want to explore and discover here.

Seems like a great place to visit! You're lucky you have your relatives living there, you should visit them sometime soon and use the advantage that you have :)
I hope to visit Malaysia someday!

I herald from the Malaysian/Chinese genes and was born and raised in a western country too so I totally relate!
The food is absolutely to die for (and so are the markets and the shopping.) If you ever have the time, give Penang a check out - it's absolutely perfect.

I had to glance for the second time to make sure that i just read Malaysia in your title. And it is. The food is really to die for. Even if it just a street vendor. And the beaches. You should check out the islands. Pangkor, Tioman, Redang. Even as a Malaysian, i really haven't travel to all the places. Hugs and kisses from Malaysia.
great pictures and great place!! :))

Two months in Malaysia...I'm very jealous! I spent just 4 days in Kuala Lumpar two years ago and loooved it! I think your modern/yet steeped in its past description is perfect. These pictures are lovely. It's rare you get to be live like both a tourist and a local in a different country so it sounds like an amazing experience.
Nice pictures. I miss South East asia too...it's such a unique place!

wow. i had no idea you had family in malaysia. i read your sister's blog and started reading yours just recently. i didn't realize you guys were half chinese until CNY when natalie wrote about it. now, i discover you are malaysian-chinese, like me! i lived in KL for most of my childhood, went to an international school there, and now i'm living in hong kong. my mum is australian, and my husband mexican-american. so, my kids are mixed like you....sorry for the long comment from a random stranger. i just find the coincidence really cool. great pics, too.
